Jim Johnstone - An Appreciation
Posted on: 11th Aug 2008 by Gordon
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Jim Johnstone, Accordionist and Band Leader, on Monday 4th August 2008.
Jim and I go back many years. I first heard of Jim Johnstone as a young eleven year old when I was starting out on my musical career. I held him in such high esteem and was in awe of the sound that he was creating with his band at that time. I would have to say that he was my single biggest influence in the Scottish Dance Band scene.
As my own career progressed I crossed paths with Jim on many occasions and I always looked forward to engagements when Jim and his band were to provide my accompaniment. Over the years he gave me nothing but encouragement and gave his advice freely, whether it was on composition, choice of tunes or musical arrangements. I still refer to his comments to this day.
I had 2 memorable trips to Abu Dhabi as a guest in Jim's band and filled in for a while with the band when he was changing between 2nd accordionists. I learned so much from him at that time.
June and I were honoured when he agreed to play at our wedding back in 1984.
Over the years Jim played on 9 of my commercial recordings from 1980 to 2003. On many an occasion he told me how much he enjoyed being part of the team, but not as much as I enjoyed having him there, especially when he had been my idol since I was a boy.
So to conclude - thanks for everything Jim, your company, your help and your advice. But most of all, thank you for your music.

Posted on: 11th Oct 2006 by Gordon
Hi folks,
The Great Scots Concert back in August was a great success. Thanks to all the cast who helped to make it another enjoyable evening and to all the front of house and back stage helpers.
September started with a dance in Kirriemuir Town Hall as part of the annual music festival there. There was a large crowd of keen dancers and listeners. Some of the festival guests also came along to entertain.
On the 17 th September the Robert Wiseman Daries Vale of Atholl Pipe Band held their Centenary Concert in Pitlochry Festival Theatre. I was lucky enough to have been asked as one of their guest performers along with Sheena Wellington and Eddie Rose. The evening was compered by Gary West from Radio Scotland 's Pipe Line programme. The celebrations started off in the afternoon with a BBQ for 500 people! Thanks for the hospitality folks.
The Accordion & Fiddle Club season gets into full swing now and October sees me at Haddington, Thurso, Stornoway, & Alnwick. (See dates page).
I will be playing as a member of the Neil McEachern Scottish Dance Band in a broadcast from the Albert Halls, Stirling for BBC Radio Scotland 's Take the Floor programme. The recording is on Wednesday 25 th October.
My new CD will be available towards the end of October. Details available shortly.

February News

Hi folks,
On my recent trip to Northern Ireland I was joined by my son Fraser and we played to capacity crowds. The Premier Accordion and Fiddle Club hosted the first evening which was a great success. It was held in the Chimney Corner Hotel, Glengormley, Newtonabbey, Belfast . Accordionists and fiddlers travelled from far and near to participate in the evening's proceedings.
The following day it was off to Comber to meet my auld friend Ken Hopkins. Ken is a highly respected collector of accordions. The highlight for me was to have my picture taken with Will Starr's accordion. I have always admired Will's playing.
Next it was off west to Killeter Heritage Centre near Castle Derg. Again the hall was filled to capacity for this unique night which was to take the form of a concert. We were made to feel very welcome.
John and Betty Rooney deserve a special mention for their hospitality over the 3 days and for corresponding with me and organising the trip. Many thanks.
